An Open Letter From Our Founder & Executive Director
Yemen’s conflict was labelled as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in 2015 and little has changed for the better for the man-made conflict since then. Yemen, home to over 30 million people, was the poorest Arab country prior to the war. The health issues that have faced Yemen in the past 5 years are unprecedented from an infectious disease perspective with diseases such as diphtheria, dengue fever, COVID-19 and cholera. With less than 50% of health facilities functioning in the country and more under threat of fuel shortages and funding cuts, the healthcare situation is expected to exacerbate for the 19.7 million Yemenis in need of healthcare and the more than 24 million people in need of humanitarian protection or assistance. Concerns over food insecurity, sanitation, safe drinking water, economic collapse, fuel shortages and exchange volatility with the Yemeni Riyal have worried the global community, particularly during this pandemic.
Yemen’s over 3000 year history brings us stories of strong and prosperous kingdoms of Minean, Sabaean and Himyarite. Yemen was known as a trading hub with its many critical ports in the Southern Arab Peninsula.
This toolkit is designed to inform global health advocates and social justice allies of the world’s humanitarian crisis and shed ways on how we can support efforts to assist in this crisis. This is meant to be an evolving guide that will be continuously updated. We hope this guide will bring some of the much needed attention to a crisis that has taken too many lives and devastated the lives and homes of many Yemenis.
We, at 3SistersFoundation, wanted to create a platform where health aspects of this humanitarian crisis were addressed through public health as well as advocacy efforts. We welcome any feedback, comments, or suggestions.
